On Nov. 2, 2023, French classes at Lexington High School went to Cary Hall to see the concert starring Haitian musical artist LeFLOFRANCO.
LeFLOFRANCO is an artist based in Ottawa, Canada. He won the Manie Musicale music competition, where students vote on their favorite French song from a bracket of sixteen, last year, with his song “Danser Avec Toi”. This prompted him to go on tour to thank and appreciate students all over the U.S. who voted for him.
Teachers and students alike connected to LeFLOFRANCO’s universal themes, such as positivity and resilience. These messages brought together students who were eager to immerse themselves in this authentic representation of Francophone culture, the culture of French-speaking countries.
“We wanted to provide students with a really good enrichment opportunity and the chance to see a very talented, multicultural artist perform live and give students a chance to revisit songs as well as cover more of his work,” Heather Kimura, a French teacher at LHS, said.
Many students from different schools around the area attended the concert and seemed to enjoy the experience.
“[I attended] because it would be an enriching and fun experience, for not only me, but for my peers,” Elizabeth Spriano, a freshman, said.
At the beginning of the concert, most students sat in their seats, but after a few songs, LeFLOFRANCO invited them to stand up and go closer to the stage. Students began to sing and cheer him on together.
In addition to entertainment, the French teachers hoped that the students would feel encouraged to learn about Francophone and French culture.
“Learning about Francophone cultures also helps students have a global mindset and be more empathetic to others who are different from them and be open minded to different points of view,” Kimura said.
LeFLOFRANCO’s music also allowed students to bond.
“Music is something that brings people together regardless of language. The language barrier was no problem, everyone connected with each other,” Hiya Singh, a freshman, said.
