Jeffery Lo, a senior at Lexington High School and the captain of the boys’ golf team, qualified for the MIAA States in golf this past season. Lo, who has played golf since a young age, credited the MIAA qualification to his persistent dedication and determination.
“[The key factors were] just being consistent throughout my practice regimen, showing up to practice, and really putting in the work outside of school. During my off days or even in my free time I would go to this indoor place and work on my swing,” Lo said.
However, Lo faced several obstacles along the way. The summer before this past golf season, he suffered from a significant injury.
“I hurt my back really bad. I herniated two of my discs in my back during the summer so I kind of knew coming into the school season that I might not be performing at the highest level. I knew that I would be playing with this injury throughout the year and I’m going to have to take it easy,” Lo said.
Following his injury, he struggled to perform consistently during the beginning of the season.
“I actually lost my first two personal matches which was a really big shot to my confidence. The season’s only so long, there’s only 12-13 matches, and losing the first two at the very beginning really skewed me in the wrong way.… It was really hard to be able to think that ‘Oh this match will go better for me’ after thinking that ‘there are so many mistakes and so much that I left out there,’” Lo said.
However, Lo ultimately finished off the season strongly. Despite his significant improvement, Lo had not expected to qualify for the MIAA States and was pleasantly surprised to find out during his sectional meet.
“When I saw the leaderboard saying I did qualify, I was shocked. Coming into it, I didn’t expect much but seeing the result kept my golf career at high school going for at least one more day,” Lo said.
Looking into the future, Lo hopes to stay in touch with the LHS Golf Team as he plans to continue to compete in golf throughout college.
“I really hope that we keep this strong community that we’ve built. Plenty of kids try out each year and I hope that continues to happen. As for my future goals, I obviously want to play college golf. I have been talking to a bunch of places and I really hope that everything will fall into place because that is my final goal for right now,” Lo said.
