Lexington High School has multiple unique strengths. Perhaps the most well-known among them is STEM students.
Damon Gurvich is a junior who has been successful in some of the most highly competitive science competitions for high schoolers, including, the National and International Biology Olympiad, Science Bowl, and Physics Olympiad.
Gurvich is particularly interested in biochemistry, but has participated in competitions surrounding two general categories of science: biology and physics. Gurvich has worked his way to one of the highest levels of competitive high school science as a member of the United States National Biology Olympiad team, which is composed of six students. At the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), Gurvich won a silver medal, placing as one of the best in the world.
“When I went to IBO, I got silver. I just want to go back and get gold. But at the same time, it’s not that huge of a deal anymore,” said Gurvich.
Given his achievements at the IBO, Gurvich believes he may shift his focus to physics instead. Despite this, Gurvich will continue as the biologist in the LHS Science Bowl team, which placed first in the National Science Bowl in 2023.
Behind his awards, however, is an interest in science and problem-solving. The most important and enjoyable aspect of his experiences in science is rooted in his curiosity.
“It’s fun to fight and see these complex systems and break them down into parts,” Gurvich said.
Despite his international-level accolades, Gurvich recognizes the importance of maintaining a social life, something students commonly sacrifice for the sake of grades and extracurriculars.
“I think it’s important to be grounded. If you sort of neglect all those other aspects of your life, maybe you’ll be a little bit successful at the thing that you aspire to do. But that will come at the expense of your future and you as a whole,” Gurvich said.
Overall, Gurvich believes having a genuine interest in science matters more than actively seeking out awards, and credits his success in competitions to his dedication and enjoyment of studying the subject.
“You can’t really go anywhere without a passion for what you’re looking for,” Gurvich said.
