On Jan. 7, Lexington High School hosted the annual Senior District Festival for all highschools in the Northeast district. The festival was organized by the Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA), a state unit for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), an organization of American music educators dedicated to advancing music education in schools across the country.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for students from across the Northeast district to come together and make music with outstanding educators and conductors,” Jared Cassedy, the K-12 Performing Arts Coordinator for Lexington Public Schools, said.
Students in grades ten through twelve came together to showcase talent in the chorus, band, orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble. Before the rehearsals took place, students from over 50 different schools across the district auditioned for a spot at the senior festival. Out of the 907 students who auditioned, 426 were accepted and met over three rehearsals during the week of the festival.
“We had 70-74 students from LHS participating this year, contributing to the vibrant musical atmosphere,” Cassedy said.
Considering the number of students involved, preparing for the festival required meticulous attention to logistics.
“We worked closely with the Festival Coordinator to ensure adequate spaces and equipment availability. Our large ensembles required extensive coordination, but our team ensured a smooth experience for all involved,” Cassedy said.
The festival, which was ultimately successful, provided an invaluable musical experience for attendees.
“Our teachers banded together to ensure everything ran smoothly. It’s a reflection of the strong community we have here at Lexington High School,” Cassedy said.
