The transition from middle to high school can be filled with anticipation and anxiety. While Lexington High School gives students more freedom in the classes and activities they choose to take part in, it can still feel overwhelming to start at a new school with a much larger campus and many unfamiliar faces.
As you transition into ninth grade, remember that being aware of your mental health and taking care of yourself is essential to doing well and having an enjoyable year. It’s common for students to feel academic anxiety or to feel pressure from others. You may feel stressed about upcoming tests, overwhelming workloads, or just being able to navigate high school overall.
Fortunately, LHS has many resources that students can take advantage of, and there are plenty of ways students can prioritize their mental health so that they feel less stressed.
For all four years at LHS, students are assigned to a guidance counselor. These counselors help students when they are going through a hard time or need a breather. If you ever need someone to talk to regarding stressful situations or need to get any additional help, your guidance counselor is always a great option.
Other than your guidance counselor, forming positive relationships with trusted adults and close friends is essential. Taking part in sports, clubs, or theater productions allows you to form bonds and friend groups with people you can trust and offers moments to look forward to when you feel overwhelmed.
There are many events that happen throughout the school year that allow students to take a break from their academic life. Each grade’s Class Council hosts school dances two to three times a year, which are a great way for students to have a night to enjoy themselves. There is also an I-block hosted throughout May (Mental Health Awareness Month) that holds events that help students take care of their minds.
All in all, there are plenty of ways to make sure that you have time to relax and enjoy your freshman year. I wish you all the best and a memorable school year.
