Never-ending lines, chaotic screams, and desperately extended hands define the Lexington High School cafeteria. To say that it’s overwhelming for a first-timer is an understatement. To avoid ending up with a disappointing meal during your first few weeks, it’s a good idea to get a head start in exploring the food options that are offered. Luckily for you, I’ve written a guide to get you started.
Make-a-Sandwich: This is by far the most popular station and usually has the longest wait time. Countless students eagerly wait for a gooey cheese-filled delight or the satisfying crunch of greens and tomatoes. However, if the line has gotten too long or you have a large appetite, consider looking elsewhere to ease your craving for food. Location: Commons I and across from Commons II.
Salad bar: Grab yourself a plastic container and have your choosing from the various toppings that are offered. There’s no wait time for this option, making it a great pick for anyone in a hurry to finish up their homework assignment or study for an assessment before the lunch bell rings (it will happen, trust me). Location: Commons I and Commons II.
Nachos/Rice Bowl station: This is one of my go-to meals—the line moves reasonably quickly and the food itself is filling. Start by choosing nachos or a rice bowl, then add black beans, beef, chicken, or veggies as your “main” topping. Top it off with any of the following toppings: pico de gallo, guacamole, onions, jalapenos, sour cream, lettuce, and cheese. As long as it fits into your bowl, there’s no limit to how many toppings you can add. Location: Commons II.
Burger line: Here, you can find a classic hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken parmesan, veggie burger, crispy chicken, or spicy chicken sandwich with a side of fries. The line may be long at times, but the quick pace makes it a short wait. You can also grab a pre-made burger from commons 2 if you’re in a hurry. If the school burgers aren’t for you, you can also ask for a small portion of fries. Location: End of Commons I and Commons II.
Pizza: Alongside the typical cheese and pepperoni-topped slices is the main pizza choice, with additional options that differ on a daily basis and range from buffalo chicken to pineapple and roasted onions. Some students find the pizza to be a bit too greasy, but I still find it an enjoyable meal. Location: Commons I and Commons II.
Hot lunch: Just like in elementary and middle school, the hot lunch line offers something different every day, providing a change of pace for your palate. The options are even culturally diverse, occasionally offering chicken tikka masala and bibimbap. However, the length of the line will usually give you a gauge on how delicious the menu is. Location: Commons I.
Snacks: Grabbing a snack before the lunch bell rings can make a huge difference in your focus during class, especially if you’re running on only five hours of sleep. Your options include ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, Rice Krispies, Mott’s fruit snacks, and an assortment of chips.
Finding what suits your taste may seem like a hassle, but enjoying a hearty meal is key to staying energized throughout the second half of the day. Every option is worth a try, even if you end up realizing that, for you, homemade food is the way to go.
