I’ve known that I loved STEM subjects since middle school, but I never really knew where to express this interest and find like-minded people. Entering my freshman year, I was blown away by how many STEM clubs there were at Lexington High School.
With STEM being such a large part of the culture of LHS, it comes as no surprise that many STEM-focused clubs have sprung up throughout the school. However, with so many options to choose from, finding the right club for you can be difficult. I’m here to walk you through the options we have here at LHS.
To those of you who may already be familiar with Science Olympiad or Science Bowl from middle school, these clubs also exist at LHS, though at a more competitive level. However, there are also many more clubs to join, including but not limited to National Ocean Sciences Bowl, VEX Robotics, and Math Club.
At the beginning of the school year nearly all the clubs at LHS will participate in the Activities Fair. I recommend you join the Google Classrooms of any clubs that interest you to stay in the loop.
Like many of the sports LHS offers, competitive STEM clubs at LHS require tryouts to join. However, with enough practice, you’ll be able to make these teams. Just remember that even if you don’t make it past tryouts in your freshman year, you will still have many more opportunities in your later high school years.
A big question I asked myself when choosing clubs my freshman year was, “What clubs are going to be good for my college apps?” But after receiving guidance from my upperclassmen friends, I realized that not everything you do at LHS has to be for college. Put college applications aside when considering clubs, as you’ll be able to find the clubs you truly want to join. You’ll have a much more enjoyable and stress-free high school experience.
Happy club hunting!
