BLACKPINK member Lisa and Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía have returned just in time to deliver their new single: “New Woman”–a song that just might be one of the most empowering and evocative anthems of 2024.

With an interesting blend of industrial-style bass and reggaeton rhythms, ‘New Woman’ generates an infectious beat and energy that demands to be heard by all. Switching between a hard, down-to-the-punch rap and catchy melody, Lisa simultaneously showcases her cross-genre versatility and her remarkable tone resonance. 

“Purple into gold / pain has come and gone again”

Lisa’s song lyrically explores deeply personal themes: self-confidence and authenticity, especially. Her lyrics challenge her listeners to embrace their flaws and individuality, promoting the message that true strength comes from being unapologetically yourself. This message seems targeted specifically towards young teens.

High school is undoubtedly a crucial time for students to begin exploring their multifaceted identity–and social media doesn’t make that any easier. While students are constantly bombarded with unrealistic expectations and images of perfection on all platforms, Lisa and Rosalía reject the standards of the media. 

They both sing about becoming a “new woman,” breaking through all setbacks and criticism to become the best new version of themselves. They narrate their own journeys and self-discoveries throughout the song–albeit in a tad over-romanticized way.

Regardless, Lisa is without a doubt, a truly authentic example of what it means to define your own narrative. From her trainee days with YG Entertainment and her debut with BLACKPINK, to producing her own music and performing at the VMAs, her journey to becoming an influential artist is pretty darn impressive.
