Raygun, a retired professional breakdancer, went viral for her unique style of dance during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Her global fame has laid the foundation for a new physical education class at Lexington High School: “How to Break Like Raygun.” With the course set to be introduced in the 2025-2026 school year, staff members and students are already conveying their excitement that they will learn how to dance like one of the greatest athletes of all time.
“Learning and practicing how to be like Raygun is a lifetime dream, and I’m so thankful that the athletics department realized the potential of this class,” Tristan Bowen, a sophomore at LHS, said.
Many teachers have expressed similar sentiments, eagerly anticipating the addition of this new course.
“Being a dancer myself and watching Raygun’s unique and inspiring performance at the Olympic Games made me jump at the opportunity to teach such a thrilling class,” Christine Drewberry, one of the instructors for the new course, said.
While the new course will almost certainly receive a warm welcome, there are still questions regarding what exactly the class will be covering. Recently, students have been given some hints by the gym teachers.
“We want students to develop analytical breaking skills by examining the moves of one of the most influential breakers of all time. We also want students to learn to perform these unique moves and get in the mind of Raygun,” Dexter Hobling, another instructor of “How to Break Like Raygun”, said.
Although the course will not be taught until next school year, it already seems to be picking up traction. According to LHS counselors, more than 1,500 students already signed up for “How to Break Like Raygun” during course selections.
