Dear freshmen,
Welcome to CollegeBored, where we discuss everything from college applications to life at Lexington High School! I’m Ella, and I’m excited to take you along with me through my college application journey this year. Four years of high school are going to feel like a whirlwind, but before anything else, let’s talk about freshman year.
As you begin your journey at LHS, your peers have probably already reminded you of the usuals—grades, workload, GPA—but I’m here to give you another perspective. As I start to think introspectively for college essays, I’m realizing that high school is more about rediscovering yourself. It’s time to look beyond the quantitative measurements and begin planning how to make your time at LHS truly your own.
The truth is, LHS offers great grounds to start anew and explore your passions, and as a freshman, I encourage you to do both. Now is the time to form strong study habits and ask new classmates about cool hobbies. At the Activities Fair, almost all LHS clubs are on display and inviting new members to join. Don’t be afraid to sign up! One extra email sign-up for a club is always better than limiting your options—you can always condense to the ones you are most passionate about.
The next lesson of high school is realizing that, no matter where you are, there are people to uplift you, sit beside you, and journey through the day with you. Your counselors, teachers, and fellow students (including upperclassmen, no matter how scary we might seem) are here to help! That’s not to say we’re all-knowing, however. Even though we’ve probably figured out where the best bathrooms in school are by now, trust me, we’re still learning right alongside you.
Nevertheless, everyone’s LHS experience is going to be different, so don’t base all your decisions on what others are doing. Freshman year is the first step everyone takes, just like how getting lost at LHS on your first day is a pretty universal experience.
So, start your journey of self-exploration, find your people, and don’t be afraid to redefine yourself. There’s always more waiting for you out there. I wish you the best of luck, and I’ll see you in the next issue!
With full confidence in all of you,
Ella
