Welcome to Lexington High School! Understandably, you might be overwhelmed—your new school is much larger than Clarke, Diamond, and most other middle schools—but do not fret. We would like to share with you some important advice of how to navigate LHS’s four buildings.
Places that Might Be Hard to Find
The Mods are sneaky buildings. Both are silver and rectangular and look very much like steel shoeboxes. You’ll be able to see the Science Mods from outside, but you can also access them from a door in the back corner of the Science Building—to the right and down the corridor if you enter through the main Science Building doors.
The Science Mods are for select STEM classes, but your history and English classes are in the Freshman Mods, which are attached to the Main Building. You can get there through blue double doors if you turn right from the main entrance and walk far down the hall (you’ll have to turn left multiple times) and look left. Or, you can get to them if you exit the Main Building from Commons I.
Also, another essential spot is the Nurse’s Office. Walk down the main hallway toward the Quad, but before you pass the main office, turn left and walk down the small corridor leading towards Science Building.
Alternative Pathways
You’ll probably familiarize yourself with LHS’s many paths like we did after seeing upperclassmen go through doors we hadn’t known about. But, we’d like to save you the pain of being drenched or taking the long way to your class.
First, a list of shortcuts:
- As mentioned previously, exiting the Main Building from Commons I will take you to the Freshman Mods. Using this route is also faster than walking through the Main Building if you want to get to classrooms in the 170s and 240s.
- The door next to the Nurse’s Office connects the Main Building to the Science Building.
- Entering the Main Building from the Quad using a side door (sometimes locked, sometimes not) to the left of Commons II brings you to a staircase in the Art Wing.
You’ll also notice that all LHS buildings have overhangs, which occasionally stretch between buildings—between Main and Science, between Science and World Language, and between the Science Mods and Math. You could also sprint through the Quad or dance whimsically in the rain. Your choice!
Important Tips
Finally, more complicated matters—in a school of over 2,000 students, you can expect foot traffic. Enter the main hallway during passing time or at 3:10 p.m., and you might be pressed between backpacks for three minutes while you trudge five-abreast in the current of students. You might be wondering—which hallways clog the most?
The main hallway. Between the auditorium and the library, this section receives the most foot traffic during passing periods. Be wary of rainy afternoons and the end of the day: during those times, the main hallway can take up to three minutes to walk past. As more time passes, you will find your own detours to avoid the traffic!
Another place to be careful of is right in front of the first math building doors. Between passing time it can get especially crowded there. However, you can cut past this by entering the Science Mods door near the science building and taking a right.
We hope that this lengthy guide will help you somewhat in your navigation around LHS. Hopefully, you will find the tricks through each hallway and make each class on time!
