Lorelei Marcell: Artist of the Issue

Lorelei Marcell, a senior at Lexington High School, has been juggling being a student with pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter.

On September 11, 2020, Marcell released her song “Eyes Closed” on Spotify, which has since been streamed over 80,000 times on the platform. Marcell has always had a passion for music and is involved in several music programs at LHS, including The Madrigal Singers,  Mixed Nuts, and the jazz ensemble.

“I definitely fell in love with music from a super young age. But, I think it’s something that the older I got, the more I figure out who I want to be as an artist. The more I’m writing, the more I make a personal bond with it. It’s definitely something I’m still continuing to adapt to but I can’t picture myself being as interested in something else,” Marcell said.

Marcell also credits her success to her family and friends, whose support has enabled her to pursue music at a young age.

“I have a twin sister and she’s so supportive; my parents are unbelievably supportive. I mean, they’re letting me move to LA and to pursue music, so I think that’s pretty awesome to be able to have their support,” Marcell said.

Indeed, after she graduates from LHS, the next chapter of Marcell’s life involves pursuing music full-time.

“I’m not going to go straight to college. I’m going to move out to Los Angeles next year and just do music full time. That’s my plan as of now, but [I’m] still taking music classes and writing a ton,” Marcell said.

Marcell’s career continues to reach new heights: her song “Summertime High”, gained 311k views on Youtube  and 292.6k streams on Spotify. Although Marcell loves writing music and performing, she is using her growing platform to reveal the struggles that come with pursuing music.

“The music industry itself is super glamorized and looks so fancy from the outside. Oh you’re getting streams and you’re getting money, so therefore you’re happy, but I think there [is] tons of competition, everyone is trying to do similar things and it really just comes down to being in the right place at the right time,” Marcell said.

A priority for Marcell has been to use her voice to speak out about what matters to her.

“I think that it’s really important that if you do have a platform to make it about yourself and your brand and what that’s about but to also use it for good during the election and all that… just speaking out about what you’re passionate about I think is really important,” Marcell said.

Marcell shares what she hopes her audience can glean from her music.

“I just want people to feel connected and feel something. I think we’ve all listened to a song and you felt something that you didn’t feel  before you listened to it and I really think that’s my main goal, if I could just make people feel emotions whether it be sad, happy, or excited, I think that’s my main takeaway from my music,” Marcell said.
