On Friday, Oct. 17th, the Lexington High School varsity football team played against Reading. Currently, LHS stands with two wins and two losses, while Reading is at one win and three losses.
Looking ahead, LHS will play Concord Carlisle High School at Fenway Park for a Thanksgiving special.. Behind the scenes, the entire football program has been putting in work to prepare for this game.
Preparation for games goes beyond the physical aspect of football. For example, communication is essential for the team to improve its game
“I think a lot of the mistakes and problems we have come from communication. From the outside looking in, it’s definitely something we need to work on,” Michael Denoncourt, a junior and varsity football player, said.
Like any sport, football requires mental resilience, and during games, it’s important that the coach is there to help the team stay focused.
“We usually need a coach to try to get us to regroup and get us back into the game,” Kian Millett, a junior and varsity football player, said.
Unity is a crucial factor in determining any team’s success. While the common ideology of training is to improve physicality and strategy, the program places equal emphasis on working to become one cohesive team. This becomes especially important during tougher weeks.
“In these cases, we just look to our leaders and captains to get us back on the right path. This week especially, I think we have all come together, especially with injuries and people leaving,” Denoncourt said.
Looking forward, as the team continues in its preparation for high-intensity games, its coaching staff emphasizes a strong mindset.
“As the coach says, we’ve got to be mentally prepared, and obviously physically prepared; just do what we’re coached to do,” Millett said.
