Hi everyone, and welcome back to Minuteman’s Update! It’s been a while since I last wrote a column due to vacations and AP Exams, and I’m so excited to be back. Today we will be discussing ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran, as well as a shooting and takedown outside the White House.
Indirect peace talks that began in late April came to a screeching halt as Iran claimed that the United States violated the ceasefire agreement and struck an area near the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman that has been essential to oil shipments to and from the Middle East. For many years, it has been a key location in the ongoing conflict. Following months of bombing campaigns and an internet blackout in Iran, the conflict seemed to be coming to an end amid ongoing talks between Lebanon, the United States, and Iran. A ceasefire agreement had been made, the Internet was returning to some areas of urban Iran, and both countries were seemingly working towards a way forward. However, reports coming from the Iranian government last night claim that the United States struck Hormozgan, an area near the Strait. The Iranian government responded by saying they will “not hesitate to defend themselves.” As of today, it is unclear whether the peace talks will be moving forward and what that will look like. Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan insists Turkey will continue facilitating peace talks between the two nations, and claims he is in close contact with Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian and other top Iranian officials. At the same time, President Trump has put increasing pressure on countries in the region like the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to support Israel as a part of the peace negotiations. This support, especially from Saudi Arabia, could put more strain on the already tentative deals. More on the ongoing conflict in our next edition!
Onto more domestic news, on Saturday, May 23, a young man recently identified as Nasir Best was killed in downtown D.C after opening fire just north of the White House. According to Trump officials, Best opened fire near the White House on numerous Secret Service agents and a Secret Service booth. President Trump was in the White House when the shooting went down, but was unaffected. Best was shot and killed by Secret Service agents after firing around thirty shots at the officers. According to further investigation, this was not Best’s first run-in with the Secret Service, as he had previously tried and failed to gain entry into the White House in July of 2025, and was arrested by Secret Service agents. Following this incident, Best was then sent to a psychiatric facility in Washington D.C. However, this time, after being shot by numerous Secret Service agents, Best was taken to George Washington University Hospital, where he died soon after.
That’s all I have for you this month! Thank you so much for reading.
