On Nov. 12, students gathered at Lexington High School to attend the Asian Student Union (ASU) x Cooking Club Sushi-Making Party, an event dedicated to raising relief funds for Myanmar. The country was hit by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in March 2025 and is currently experiencing civil conflict.
Kyuri Lee, a senior at LHS and one of the co-leaders of ASU, explained the process behind preparing the event.
“The sushi chefs were a lot of help. They brought in their own rice from work, and they brought a lot of the ingredients already prepared. We just needed to be there to help set up the equipment and the tables. They played a huge role in preparing for the event,” Lee said.
In addition to student preparations for the party, teachers who serve as club leaders also played a major role in event preparations.
“Our club advisor, Ms. Shih, she’s always a lot of help as well. She helped to organize and call the [sushi chefs] and everything,” Lee said.
The fundraiser offered students a unique and enjoyable experience.
“We got to take our ingredients, so what we put inside the roll, and a professional chef came to teach us, and that was such a cool experience,” Karen Eto, a junior at LHS said.
Eto also shared a personal highlight from making sushi at the event.
“I found it really hard to make it into a good shape, because if you put too many ingredients into it, it kind of falls out. But it was really fun,” Eto said.
As well as raising relief funds for Myanmar, the sushi-making party brought the LHS community together.
“I got to talk to a lot of people, and I saw that other students from different grades and different clubs were also intermingling, which was super cool to see,” Lee said.
In the future, ASU looks forward to hosting similar events that address disasters impacting Asian communities around the world, raise cultural awareness, and strengthen the bonds within the LHS community.
“We want to make sure that we’re aware of cultural communities and make sure that we’re helping each other out. If there’s a cause that you want to bring attention to, make sure to reach out and participate in the events, because it really brings people together,” Lee said.
