One of the most notable aspects of Lexington High School’s schedule is the amount of holidays where students and staff get to take the day off, especially near the beginning of the year. These holidays include Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Diwali. A day off provides students with extra time to study, rest, or catch up on sleep, while students who celebrate these holidays can also spend the day with their families and observe them properly.
However, holidays can come with some issues: tests being rescheduled, losing days on in-school assignments, and more. On top of this, students have to make up the missing days at the end of the year, causing our school year to end later than other districts. So, do LHS students think having these days off is worth it?
An important positive of mid-week holidays is the reset and extra time it provides students to complete school work. Caroline Du, a sophomore at LHS, said that she “usually uses days off to [her] advantage to get ahead of school work.”
Other benefits include the mental breaks from heavy workloads and more time for extracurricular activities.
However, some students feel that single-day holidays can be hard to adjust from.
“One-day school holidays are bad because we need multiple days to reset from holidays,” Penny Davy, a sophomore at LHS, said.
Davy preferred longer breaks, such as winter and spring break. She noted that multiple days can give students more time to refocus and complete tasks, compared to shorter holidays.
Davy also said that she would rather have a longer summer break than more single-day holidays, saying that “at the end of the school year, we aren’t using our time on anything too important anyway.”
Although many LHS students have different opinions on either fewer, longer breaks or more frequent, shorter breaks, it is fair to say that a break once in a while can benefit everyone. This idea can be seen in our current school schedule. Winter and spring break are implemented for a reason, as it is important for students to be able to have time to rest and relax amidst stressful periods of time at school. Celebrating more holidays creates a more inviting environment in our school, which is always a positive.
