The Lexington High School Class Council plays a central role in fostering community and advocating for student voices.
This year, freshman class council elections began in mid-September. During the election, finding effective ways to gain votes and earn the support of peers was one of the most crucial factors in getting elected.
Isabella Kim, a newly elected freshman member of the Student-Faculty Senate, initially ran for both Senate and class president.
“I was inspired to run for student government because I want to make sure that all voices are heard and accounted for. I think the students’ needs and desires should be reflected in the school’s decisions, so I wanted to help make that happen,” Kim said.
Kim devised multiple ways to gain votes, such as setting up accounts on social media and creating posters and stickers.
“After gaining my nomination signatures and turning in my forms, I made an Instagram account to raise awareness about my campaign. Then, I made posters and put them up around the school and went up to students, handing out stickers that promoted my campaign,” Kim said.
By supporting their fellow students and taking actions to execute the ideas of the student body, the Student Council works to improve student experiences and build a community where all voices are heard.
The process of running for a Student Council position requires courage and persistence. Kim remarked that the process itself is a valuable experience, encouraging her peers to take initiative and pursue leadership opportunities.
“It might be scary to put yourself out there, but don’t let that stop you from going after your goals. ” Kim said.
