The Northeastern Senior Districts audition is an audition that is widely known in the music department. This year, the audition took place at North Andover High School, with many Lexington High School students in orchestra, band, and chorus students attending. Students audition with the goal of being accepted to perform in the Northeastern Senior Districts Festival. This closely relates to the Northeastern Junior Districts audition, which is meant for younger students and quite similar to the Senior version, except that it is slightly easier due to the different audition requirements.
To participate in Senior Districts, a student must be a member of their school’s orchestra. I think that this is a well-written requirement because it ensures that students are within the field of music in their school. It incentivises students to participate in their school’s own music programs if they want to attend the audition.
Going to Senior Districts was a new experience for me as a freshman, especially because there was a larger number of people auditioning compared to Junior Districts. However, one similarity between the two programs is the fact that you learn a large portion of a piece just to play a small part in the actual audition. It does make sense in a way, but I think assigning a smaller section to practice could potentially be more effective. During the audition process, it was fun to spend time with friends, but there are some drawbacks, which is the stress of performing well.
Overall I do think that attending an audition like this is a good musical experience. First, it allows students to compete against others and gauge where their music skills are at. In addition, learning how to go through an audition process is another added benefit. Although auditioning against people in the entire Northeastern district sounds daunting, I do think participating is more beneficial than detrimental because the precise audition scores and feedback allows students to reflect on their skills
Senior Districts audition matters because it is a fun and challenging musical experience that can help students improve and gain exposure to the musical field. In addition, there are many minute details that make it worth going. Note that everyone’s experiences are different, so what each student gains and benefits from the audition might be different. Maybe one day, you can attend the audition yourself and improve your musical education too.
